Baby Update

I haven't posted anything pregnancy related in a while. Things are pretty much on automatic pilot in that department. I had my 32 week check-up with Tammy the midwife this week. We spent most of the time talking about Pampered Chef. Tammy's daughter Ashley sells PC and invited me to a PC auction.

As far as the baby goes- things look great. Heartbeat was in the 150's and I measured fine- a half week behind actually, which is a very nice change from my usual habit of measuring ahead. I'm still overall pretty comfortable, although getting a little bit tired. Definitely feeling the nesting instinct coming on. I've been cleaning pretty heavily since we've been home from our trip.

We did talk a bit about the upcoming birth and how we want to handle or not handle it.

Tammy doesn't particularly love when I start to dilate past a couple of centimeters being that we live about 45 minutes from the hospital and I've had lots of babies before. The fact that both Brandon and Jackson were born VERY quickly once I hit 4 centimeters doesn't make her feel any better, though in fairness, both Sydney and Bree's labors progressed much slower.

I am not eager to be induced- even though we'd use a non chemical induction (meaning no pictocin or any other type of contraction stimulating drug or cervical ripening agent...instead we'd just rupture the membranes and wait for contractions). Yet, I'm also not eager to scramble for childcare arrangements at 3:30 in the morning on some random April Wednesday. Childcare for 9 isn't the easiest to come by. Basically no one we know can handle them ALL, at least not very efficiently. Drew and Emanuel would be okay with their little siblings for a time, but not for a whole day and preferably not in a situation where they'd be required to get them all up, feed them breakfast and then get them all dressed for the day. And certainly not overnight. That would just be too much for them. So...

the game plan is this. If at 38-39 weeks I am dilated to say, 4 or so (as I have been the past two pregnancies) and baby is sitting nice and low and engaged in the pelvis, then we'll probably just go on in and break my water. I don't particularly fear the possibility of contractions NOT starting and necessitating pitocin (which isn't a great idea for a VBAC mom as it basically triples or quadruples the risk of rupture). At 4 centimeters labor isn't far off anyhow and I'm confident that contractions would begin. If I'm not dilated significantly or baby is still floating pretty high up there (hence, not ready at all) then we'll just wait on labor to begin on its own. This is what I secretly hope happens, yet what I fear at the same time, for the aforementioned reasons.

The reason I don't love the whole induction idea is more because it means spending LOTS of time lying around Anderson Hospital. I'd rather go into L&D in active labor or when I get uncomfortable enough that I want to be there, as it means less time to be frustrated by their policies and rules. For me, its all about control. I don't like to be told what to do. I can decide for myself if I'd like a drink, a snack, a trip to the potty, pain relief or just a walk down the hallway. Having a baby doesn't diminish my mental capacity to make those choices nor does is render me in any way sick or in need of rescue or anyone to "take over" those choices for me. So, I'd ideally love to stay home until I decide I want to go in during labor.

So time will tell which route this baby's delivery will take. Then the fun part...picking a name for our sweet, new, little one. Plus, its my turn to make the final selection once we narrow our list! I can't wait to see what she looks like and which name will just seem to naturally "fit" her. Getting excited....
