Shortcomings

Sometimes it seems like I'm suddenly smacked in the face by the reality of how hugely I've been blessed with this great big family. Also, at times, it seems like I'm smacked in the face by the reality of the insanity and chaos that this many people in one family can bring. This morning was one of those times. One of both times, actually.
As I stood at the toaster, methodically spreading butter on each piece as it popped out and handing Styrofoam plates to waiting hands, I wondered about the families that actually make real breakfasts in the morning...you know, the moms who make bacon and eggs or something that demonstrates they are aware that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Before I could ponder my apparent shortcoming for very long, my thoughts were interrupted by Brice's refusal to eat. He hates breakfast, he explained, sitting resolutely at the table with his arms crossed. Seconds later, my attempts at convincing Brice to have at least one piece of toast were spoiled as Sydney began crying out indignantly "Her touched my food! Her touched my food!" A quick peek at the other end of the table revealed Bree, leaning over Sydney's plate, poking her finger in the butter on Sydney's bread. Following that was a desperate search for the toothpaste, an argument over who owned a 3-D ruler that I've never seen before, yet three kids claim sole ownership of, and an argument regarding who has more class field trips planned for the year. Two kids tried to sneak soda out of the pantry and one kid disappeared up stairs when it was time to go to the bus stop and I "found" him five minutes after I thought everyone had left. Brice spilled milk necessitating a last minute shirt change and Sydney pitched a fit because I didn't pour her milk into the cup of her choosing.

When they all walked out the door I reconsidered my "shortcoming." Mornings are a production in our house, no matter how early we get up, or how prepared we are the night before. If I busied myself with anything more adventurous than toast, oatmeal or frozen waffles, there's no telling what my kids would destroy or what mischief they might make. I think my kids will do just fine with the simple, less than ideal but gets-the-job-done breakfast that I feed them. Afterall, the school feeds them lunch so early it really should be categorized as "brunch" and I do make pretty good after school snacks....\I'll have to find other ways to excel at motherhood. Breakfast will not be one of them any time soon.

  1. You're doing great! According to the commercial everyone loves Nutella on their toast for breakfast. Maybe Brice would?
    Lifting up prayers right now!
Psalms 118:4-6 Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever. I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place. The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

  3. Know that I'm praying!
Psalms 118:14-16 The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.

  4. We have such amazing eyewitness testimony of Jesus! No matter what happens, in Him you can still have joy! Praying!
1 John 1:1-4 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

  5. Know that the Lord is always with you, wrapping His loving arms around you and holding on tight!
Psalms 18:2-6 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

  6. Here praying as always!
Psalms 18:28-30 For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

  7. Stopping by to let you know that you're always in my thoughts and prayers!
Psalms 91:1-2, 4 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. (4) He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

  8. Whatever the Lord allows to happen in your life, He'll get you through! Praying!
Psalms 91:9-12 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
